Norochcholai plant built below international standards

The Government says the Norochcholai coal power plant has been built below international standards and that is one reason it cannot handle lightning.
Deputy Minister of Power and Energy, Ajith P. Perera said that three power generating units at the coal power plant had shut down as a result of lightning recently and this affected the electricity supply in the entire country.
“When lightning strikes Polpitiya all three units at the Norochcholai coal power plant shut down,” he said.
He said that the entire country is dependent on the 900mw of electricity from the Norochcholai coal power plant and when the plant breaks down it becomes a major issue.
The Deputy Minister said that the coal power plant has been built to very poor standards that it cannot even handle lightning strikes.
Ajith P. Perera said that said that the current Government, when it was in the opposition, warned that the power plant was of poor standard.
However now he says the Government is not in a position to build the plant from scratch using better quality products as that will be very costly. (Colombo Gazette)
