Deputy Minister of Power and Renewable Energy Ajith Perera said energy is a key sector expected to contribute to development programs if the economy is to maintain high growth.
“We are also trying to ensure that energy supply is of high quality,” he told a news conference to launch the ‘Green Energy Champion’ initiative.
The campaign, supported by Germany’s GIZ aid agency, is a country-wide competition identifying and recognizing innovative ideas on improving energy efficiency and encouraging use of renewable energy.
Perera said the government aims to achieve energy self-sufficiency by 2050 and wants to maximise use of renewable energy and conservation measures.
“Energy conservation and management program need to be implemented in industries, commercial establishments, state sector institutions and households,” he said.
Last week the Cabinet of ministers approved the setting up of a Presidential task force for demand side management.
“Energy conservation requires mass awareness,” Perera said. “This Green Energy Champion campaign will create more awareness.
Individuals as well as community organisations like schools can take part in the campaign
Prize money of 30,000 euros (4.7 million rupees) will be given to the winning idea.
